Find out at our exclusive community event on 12 November in „Rembrandt in Amsterdam. Creativity and Competition“ – apply now for one of the coveted tickets!
This autumn, the Städel Museum is celebrating the greatest Dutch artist of the seventeenth century: Rembrandt van Rijn. The exhibition „Rembrandt in Amsterdam. Creativity and Competition“ takes a look for the first time at Rembrandt’s success story – from the young, ambitious artist from Leiden to the famous master in Amsterdam. Sixty works of art by Rembrandt enter into dialogues with paintings by other artists of his time. The exhibition brings together important works by Rembrandt in the Frankfurt collection, including The Blinding of Samson (1636), and juxtaposes these with outstanding loans from international museums. A total of roughly 140 paintings, prints, and drawings by Rembrandt and his contemporaries – from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, the National Gallery in London, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. – shed light on the artist’s impressive rise and breakthrough in the years 1630 to the mid-1650s.
The exhibition is organised by the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, in cooperation with the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
